My way of determining how good a year has been is now done by counting up the amazing parts of the world I got to visit 🌏🌍🌎 This year featured: Venice, Florence, Milan, Rome 🇮🇹 DC, LA, Atlanta, New York 🇺🇸 Nice 🇫🇷 Porto, Lisbon, Lagos, Faro 🇵🇹 2015 has been pretty amazing!! I hope 2016 takes me to more beautiful cities and amazing landscapes 🌞 I hope everyone has (or in some places have had) a good New Year’s Eve and brings in 2016 with a smile 🙃❤️
Today an academic in my field that I met at a conference in London turned up at my work, no where near London or the university he works at in Wales, looking for a cup of coffee with his wife and kid.
In London I had been so proud of myself for making a good impression. The said academic remembered me, but then out of shock at the strange situation I was involved in I proceeded to ruin all the hard work I had put it to appear ‘normal’ when I first met him. Plus, since I lost my ability to function, I served them with pretty terrible coffee.
I didn’t know how to deal with the situation so I emailed my supervisor. I figured at least he could gain some light entertainment from my embarrassment.
And that is how I have ended my first term of being a PhD student. Seems about right…

When your husband and closest male friend meet for the first time and act really serious and male. And you’re just there thinking about how ridiculous and non serious these people are in real life and how they both must know it since all I do is talk about the other person to them both. Just be normal please.
I think time lapse videos are cool. This is just me driving through town. Notice that everything is still green because winter does not exist until February and then it’s gone by March.
Your town is so cute ❤️🌼❤️
Electricity is the best.
I seriously appreciate electricity so much right now. Just charging my phone and cooking my dinner is amazing and I appreciate it now probably for the first time in my life.
Now: to find food!!!
There is another weather warning for rain today (wuh oh!) but hopefully no more flooding this weekend. I’m hoping the worst thing to happen weather wise this weekend will be me getting soggy shoes and wet jeans. The weekend markets should be on in town and I think the supermarket will be open again today. FOOOOOOOD! I’ve eaten crap all week due to being unable to find food. Who’s idea was it to build the supermarket on the banks of the river!?
Life is amazing guys! We are so lucky to live such privileged lives. I’ve been complaining so much about money and stuff recently. I needed something like this to kick me in the butt and wake me up to reality.
In all seriousness though, I’ve just experienced climate change this week. We all need to get our shit together. Who knows if it’ll be your town that will be hit by climate change next. It’s a huge slap in the face and you can’t ignore it once it’s flooding your town. Don’t drive if you can walk or cycle or use public transport, conserve more energy by not using the washing machine or dishwasher if they’re not full or leaving lights on for no good reason all day, recycle more, eat less (ideally no) meat and dairy, eat more local food, stop wasting water and start hugging trees. We’re one planet.

I have students who care about religious studies, who care about their grades, and for reason care about me too.
The emails I’ve had this week just to check that I am safe and well following the floods and power outages. And the emails of thanks I’ve had today after they got given their grades, students thanking me for my help in them getting a good grade. I’m there like: guys you did so good, it’s all you. Okay actually it’s a bit me…Just kidding…🙄
It’s just so rewarding. Real people actually care and actually think I have some knowledge to impart. It’s so much fun.
Of course the ones who did badly are probably at home imagining my face on a dart board, spending all night throwing things at it and hating me. But let’s just sweep that under the rug for a month until I see them next.
